Life at Plessey

Apprenticeship Opportunities

Plessey is offering four-year higher apprenticeships, which include a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in either Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. The apprenticeship is the first step in your career as an Equipment Engineer or Facilities Engineer.

As an apprentice at Plessey, you will learn about the availability and performance of complex manufacturing systems, gaining skills from electrical, mechanical and electronic engineering fields. You will learn data analysis techniques to bring and keep systems at their optimum level and about the specification and installation of new systems to ensure their smooth integration into the manufacturing line.

Applications are now open for autumn 2025.

Theory & Practical Experience

During an apprenticeship at Plessey, you will build a portfolio of evidence to support you during the assessment process and receive guidance from The Plymouth Engineering Skills Centre who will support you every step of the way, while working alongside Plessey’s knowledgeable and highly-skilled engineers.

Entry Requirements

The entry-level qualification requirements are two A levels at grade C, including maths and a science-based subject, or successful completion of an Extended Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Engineering (either Mechanical or Electrical/Electronic).

Salary & Benefits

We recognise the need to reward progress throughout this four-year process, so after successful completion of the HNC element which takes two years, you will then be awarded a Technician grade and salary, followed by an Engineer grade and salary on apprenticeship completion.

Plessey offers a competitive salary plus additional employee benefits including private health insurance, pension scheme, life insurance, subsidised on-site gym, subsidised canteen and 28 days holiday plus paid bank holidays.

Applications are now open for autumn 2025.

Cory Browne

Advanced Engineering Apprentice

“This apprenticeship has assured me that I’ll gain three years of valuable experience and the opportunity for employment in a working environment that I’m already familiar with. I’m very grateful to work with such a great team who are so willing to share their knowledge and break down their tasks to allow me to work alongside them.”

Jake Cotton

Advanced Engineering Apprentice

“Once I heard of the position at Plessey, I was instantly intrigued by the opportunity to work for the company. The technology that Plessey is researching and developing is at the top of its field, and seeing what I would be doing to help develop microLED technology drove me to apply. After researching the company, I saw clear ways to progress and further develop my career. Since being accepted into the apprenticeship, I haven’t looked back.”
