MicroLED Direct-Drive Displays

Data-Vµ™

Plessey’s Data-Vµ platform can be driven directly from an external source, providing OEM’s and product developers with a solution to retrofit current products or develop new concept designs, around a compact, flexible and highly efficient microLED display.

Data-Vµ targets specialised applications that require symbolic/numerical content and critical live data. Due to the small form factor of the Data-Vµ display, it can be easily integrated into smart glasses, and head-mounted displays for navigation, sport & leisure, and optical instruments.

MicroLED Direct-Drive Display Solutions

Data-Vµ™ family

Segmented

The Data-Vµ Segmented chip consists of customisable pre-defined shapes that can be individually addressed and controlled. It is designed for a wide range of information display applications encompassing luminance values suitable for direct view through to projection.

Passive-Matrix

Plessey’s Data-Vµ Passive-Matrix solution is a dynamic pixelised micro-display that can provide the high brightness/low power image source demanded by the advanced compact optical projectors embedded in AR/MR information systems.

Features

Luminance

Data-Vµ displays can achieve a much higher brightness than OLED and can offer exceptionally sharp contrast even during bright daylight. Plessey’s 0.30” diagonal native green segmented display emits up to 2 million nits.

Cost-effective

Both Data-Vµ solutions are cost-effective as they are designed to be a scalable platform with reference designs for various use cases and with Plessey’s 24/7 Devon-based fabrication facility, development time is significantly reduced.

Efficiency

The displays are self-emissive and can be driven directly from an external source, requiring no intelligent backplane which simplifies the manufacturing process and improves power consumption with only a few mW of power typically consumed.

Form-factor

Due to the small form factor of the displays, currently 0.3” diagonal, they can be easily integrated into smart glasses and head-mounted displays from swimming/ski/scuba-diving goggles to cycling glasses, range finders and motorcycle helmets.

Latest achievement

Plessey has demonstrated its first monochrome passive-matrix microLED display with a resolution of 48 x 36 monochrome pixels using its native technology capability and a new pixel architecture that improves light extraction.
